Introducing Hospitalist Program

Muhlenberg Community Hospital has launched a progressive program of inpatient care.

Hospital care began to emerge as a specialty in the late 1980's. The hospitalist program evolved as a result of the primary care physicans becoming more strapped for time. While some physicians continue to make their own visits, others welcome the hospitalist program as a useful resource.

A hospitalist is an acute care physician who focuses on a inpatient's hospital care. They see the inpatients on Acute Care, Intensive Care and Long Term Care as needed. During that time they coordinate care among the physicians, nurses and support staff. In addition, the Hospitalist keeps in close contact with the Primary Care physician.

Benefits of this program are that hospitalist:
Are familiar with key staff in the hospital, including
medical and surgical consultants, discharge planners, and
other employees which improves overall care
Are able to respond to problems or crises that may arise
during patient care
Can help reduce the length of stay in the hospital

Presently, our hospitalist visit patients on the weekends, beginning Friday mornings at 8:00 AM until Monday mornings at 8:00 AM. At that time the patients will return to their Primary Care physicians care.

Our Hospitalist are both local physicians who have returned home to practice medicine: Dr. Bart Spurlin, Board Certified in Family Practice and Dr. Bracken Lewis, Board Certified in Internal Medicine.
